Needle-free injection can avoid African swine fever cross-infection

One pig, one needle is widely mentioned but rarely practiced in the internal biosecurity measures of pig farms. Needle sharing has been shown to be an important source of cross-infection of diseases within farms. Needle sharing is also thought to potentially spread the African swine fever virus among swine herds.
In order to verify this possibility, a research team from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand recently carried out relevant verification.
They used 60 4-week-old piglets divided into two groups, a group of 12 pigs as seed pigs and a group of 48 pigs as sentinel pigs.
The seed pigs were divided into 4 groups with 3 pigs in each group. Three groups were inoculated with high (10 ^ 8 copies/ml), medium (10 ^ 6 copies/ml) and low (10 ^ 1 copies/ml) doses of African swine fever virus by nasal drip respectively, and the remaining group was used as negative control group.
On day 7 after inoculation of the seeded pigs (peak virus period), the vaccine adjuvant was injected intradermal (without needles) and intramuscularly (with needles) into all four seeded pigs using a needle-free injection device and a conventional needle syringe, respectively. After injection, sentinel pigs were injected with the same dose of vaccine adjuvant using the two injection devices that had just been used. Sentinel pigs were divided into 8 groups of 6 pigs each and received adjuvant injections of two syringes from four groups of seed pigs.
Thereafter, the clinical symptoms of sentinel pigs were observed daily and African swine fever virus DNA has been detected by quantitative PCR.
Results:
All seed pigs, except the negative control group, developed viremia.
ASFV viremia was detected in all sentinel groups that used needles for intramuscular injection.
The efficiency of African swine fever virus transmission achieved using needle intramuscular injection was positively correlated with virus titers in seed pigs. The symptoms of the sentinel pigs corresponding to the high dose inoculated seed pigs were more severe and more acute.
No viremia or clinical symptoms were observed in sentinel pigs injected intradermal with a needle-free syringe.
The researchers believe that this study confirms that the African swine fever virus can be blood-borne between pigs through the sharing of needles. In this experiment, the needle-free injection prevented the virus from spreading.
